Social marketing
Marketing events are always very social affairs; anyone who has ever spent more than a couple of hours discussing the finer points of branding and search engine optimisation will know what I mean when I say that you can often need a few “medicinal” glasses of wine just to get through the boring stuff! Of course, coming back to my wife after a week of free bars and drinking with marketing colleagues is the quickest way I can think to earn myself an international divorce these days, which is why I steer clear of the strong stuff at corporate events!

But a different kind of social marketing has taken the advertising world by storm in recent years; using social media to promote products and even people. Check out the marketing recruitment pages in any industry magazines and you’ll see that every position, from lowliest assistant right up to the executives, is required to have some experience of dealing with social media. There are whole organisations that will even develop your social media marketing strategy for you, getting the very best out of blog posts, Twitter and Facebook.

It’s only sensible that companies use every resource available to them to promote themselves to consumers. And seeing as most people spend hours a day checking their Facebook status, updating their friends on Twitter and commenting on anything and everything that interests them online, it’s hardly surprising that marketers saw the potential in using them to promote and advertise their wares. Think about the last time you logged into Facebook and posted something on your own “Wall” or created a new “Status Update”. The chances were that you noticed the adverts on the right hand side of the screen changed, suddenly promoting things that seem to fit with your comments. Say you posted that you were heading for a busy day shoe shopping; all the Facebook ads would suddenly be offering you deals on designer shoes and promoting websites selling footwear. Sneaky, isn’t it? But devilishly clever and a perfect way to make sure the right ads reach the right people.
