Through Other Eyes: A South Asian Art Exhibition
Have you ever wondered what life is like for a different culture? If so, you may want to use artwork as a means of learning. True, it’s not like a history book or a documentary, but it does use creativity to help highlight various aspects of life. In fact, through art you may discover faucets of culture that books or documentaries wouldn’t be able to touch.
Such is the case with many of the pieces featured in a new art exhibition being featured at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. The name of this exhibition is Through Other Eyes, and it will feature artwork created by various artists throughout South Asia.
In terms of the artwork itself, it will express the South Asian perspective regarding various cultural concerns, especially in regards to the pressures associated with globalization. For Western mindsets these perspectives should serve as a type of catharsis, as many have their own ideas as to what defines a progressive culture. Ultimately, a nation doesn’t have to follow a particular blueprint to define itself, an important lesson that becomes reiterated as participants become engrossed in the artwork.
To make things even more interesting, all of the exhibition stands holding pieces featured in the exhibition have never been seen outside of India or Pakistan. So everything you see will be fresh and original. Compare this to exhibitions where local artists are featured. True, their artwork is still worthy but sometimes art-lovers want a change of pace with non-Western perspectives. Through Other Eyes achieves this objective.
